The first roots of Black Diamond date back to 1957, when Yvon Chouinard, started making hand-forged iron hooks to help with climbing. The company as we know it today was founded in 1989 with its global headquarters in Salt Lake City, Utah and in Innsbruck (Austria), where Black Diamond established its European offices.
Initially known for state-of-the-art carabiners and Camalot, Black Diamond has expanded its portfolio to include skis, poles, headlamps, snow safety equipment, apparel, and footwear over the years.
